Release Notes:

Thunderheads storming across the prairie, outraged students taking to
the streets, migratory herds stampeding along the tundra--any number of
images could describe the grandiose scope of Red Sparowes’ lush
vignettes. Wielding both a master’s sense of nuance and an outsider
artist’s unhindered expressionist zeal, the Los Angeles quintet created
a catalog of haunting and hallucinatory guitar orchestrations over the
course of the millennium’s opening decade. With two albums, a string of
split releases, multiple U.S. and European tours, and a number of
line-up changes under their belt, Red Sparowes are currently poised to
release their third album and most impressive creation to date, The
Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer.

It’s tempting to describe the collaborative efforts of guitarists Andy
Arahood, Bryant Clifford Meyer, Emma Ruth Rundle, bassist/pedal steel
player Greg Burns and drummer David Clifford as soundtrack music. The
absence of lyrical vocals and full reliance on instrumentation conjures
comparisons to symphonic cinema pieces. Yet no composition in the Red
Sparowes cannon feels subservient to a visual companion piece. Their
music never comes across as a disembodied accompaniment, a partial
representation of a larger composition. Every song is its own complete
microcosm, a completely realized and contained moment of beauty.

Though Red Sparowes’ music thrives unbound by narrative, the band
provides a roadmap to their muse. Their 2005 debut album, At The
Soundless Dawn, cast the scientific inevitability of the Sixth
Extinction into a grand funeral oration, revealing the message within
the individual track titles. Their second full-length, Every Red Heart
Shines Toward the Red Sun (2006) likewise provided a synopsis of the
Great Sparrow campaign of the Great Leap Forward, laying bare its
conceptual role. And, the jabbing assertions of the titles to the
Aphorisms EP (2008 digital, 2009 12" vinyl) served a thematic precursor
to the next album.

Red Sparowes' latest offering, The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein
Lies the Answer, began with the larger existential pondering of truth,
faith, order, causality, and the innate demand for an understanding of
the larger world around us. While Red Sparowes’ majesty is hardly in
need of story, the provision of the larger metaphor yields a heightened
depth and gravity to their work.

There has never been as pronounced of a leap in style and scope as with
Red Sparowes' third full length. The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein
Lies the Answer maintains their layered arrangements and swirling
amplified crescendos, Americana noir soundscapes (punctuated by the
extended pedal steel on “In Every Mind”), and gloriously triumphant
melodies (“Giving Birth to Imagined Saviors”). Earlier records focused
on the larger scope of the album, but the new album is song-centered,
with the individual tracks harboring stronger independent identities.
And where previous endeavors found the band propelled by enormous walls
of sound, they now temper their monolithic progressions with distinct
passages of separated and soft-spoken instrumentation. Red Sparowes
were suspiciously absent from the playing field over the last three
years, and now it’s apparent that they were busy drafting the grandest
statement and finest achievement of their existence.

FUCKING FINALLY!! NEW TOE YESSSSSSSSSSS

After 4 years from their debut LP '...A Vague Anxiety' in 2005, Toe has finally
come out with a new full album release, and it definitely does not disappoint.
They've ventured into new sonic territory, incorporating vocals and a
surprisingly significant amount of electronic sounds into their arrangements.
For Long Tomorrow is an ambitious release for toe, but thankfully it still
retains the same wonderful organic sound the band is personified by; lush
soundscapes laid down by the guitars and bass, solid song structures, and of
course Takashi's amazing percussive voicings from behind his kit.

This new release from the Japanese post-math-rock group Toe is absolutely
awesome. This time there are lyrics and singing in some songs, (which they have
managed to fit in very well) like after image (which is mind blowingly chill and
great) and goodbye. The overall atmosphere of this album is very chilled out.
It's amazing how these guys can make such complex music at the same time being
soothing and chill. Toe used a lot more texture and different instruments in
this release compared to the previous recordings. The result is great: the same
toe ingeniousness with clean guitar emotional jamming, but including rhodes, a
lot more acoustic guitar, some marimba/xylophone, voice, and other cool layers
of interesting instruments and sound effects.

If you enjoy post rock and not-so-frantic math rock, you will most likely enjoy
this quite a bit like i did. This is one of this year's best releases. Don't you
dare miss it.</pre>

Release Notes:
*Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) returns with its sixth
full-length recording and first since the band's line-up change in
summer 2008. Following a debut performance as a quintet at All
Tomorrow's Parties in upstate NY, the band embarked on an extensive
European tour through the fall of 2008 and entered the studio during
winter in Montreal. As/ Kollaps Tradixionales/ demonstrates, the band
has lost none of its raw and frazzled anthemic power and continues to
forge bold new ground in its search for a unique hybrid of punk, blues,
psych, folk and modern orchestral idioms.*
Anchored by the fried electric guitar and plangent voice of band leader
Efrim Menuck (who previously co-founded Godspeed You! Black Emperor )
SMZ continues to slide towards an expansive, loose and blues-inflected
balladry - not so much the inexorably riffing blues shuffle of the
title
track from its previous effort,/ 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons/, but a
more languid waltz-time marking the smouldering dynamic arcs of the new
album's opening track "There Is A Light" and gorgeous closer "'Piphany
Rambler".
Whatever the blues influence, the slow burn of SMZ bears little
relation
to typical notions of musical seduction, relaxation, or hip-swinging
satisfaction. What crackles here is much more precarious and anxious,
driven by some of this decade's more devastating lyrical conjurings of
the universal outsider and the antinomies born of 21st century western
psychic oppression. As the lyrics to "There Is A Light" attest, these
are no simple paens to the human spirit, but songs of complex,
desperate
and thorny hope. The words to this song (and so many others too often
poorly understood in the SMZ cannon) should at least give the lie to
the
oft-repeated charge that Menuck is some sort of miserablist or glib
pessimist.
And of course there is plenty going on here that ain't no blues at all,
particularly the two middle sides of this double album. "Metal Bird"
(as it has been known to fans from set lists over the past couple of
years) has been a crowd favorite in concert in recent years, careening
through a throbbing 7/4 template of intertwined ascending and
descending
lines, coalescing into unison melodies and pumping breakdowns. The
sonic references are abundant - from afrobeat to bouzouki music to hard
bop to punk rock. The three phases of the album's title track on Side
Three are indeed 'traditionals' of a sort, playing on tropes of
American
and Anglo-Saxon folk, marching song, sea shanty and hymnal. Together
they make for perhaps the most overtly enchanting ("Kollapz"), tender
("Collapse") and terrifyingly rapturous ("Kollaps") music on the
record.
